there is a way to make it stay. i use a bit of rope caulking -get it nice warm and sticky, then put up shower rod- stuff the rope caulking around the pole and a double portion under it forming a cup shape.

I found that putting them on about 10 -12 inches lower than where you want them to go, and then sliding up very slowly one side at a time makes them fit really tight. You just can't put heavy towels, etc. on the top of this type rod.
I "rest"the rod on the ledge of the shower surround and hem the curtain to fit.
Yeah, it's called a nail. the twist on rods are very short lived. The are asked to hold a good bit of weight and then when you open/shut the curtains leverage makes it worse. A physical attachment is best and the only one that will last.
Buy 2 closet rod holders at the hardware store, attach to wall with mollies if you don't hit a stud and twist your rod to fit. Dowel rods are very inexpensive. You can cut it to the size needed stain and sea or paintl it with exterior grade sealer and you'll have a beautiful rod!
Agree with Oxlade and Pdm that the most effective, long lasting, and safest solution is to use proper hardware to mount rod brackets that attach directly into the 2x4's or behind the drywall.
Tension rods tumbling down unexpectedly can cause slips where people easily become injured.
