No, i don't pay for anything until it is completed. Be careful if you have a contractor that wants payment first.

Never, never, never pay any contractor in full until the job is not only done, but the unit has been tested. Otherwise there is not incentive for the contractor to complete the work.
If they can't afford to do the job without some payment, find a reputable contractor that can. Don't take that chance..
