Kitty litter is good for dampness ...add a few charcoal briquettes to a pan of kitty litter and place in closets or under beds.
Before dehumidifiers came into being, older folks used Epsom salt. They hung the cheesecloth bag with salt over a pail and then watched the water drip. The salt sucks the water out of the air.
