Should be installed with SCREWS.

If the are popped out enough to grab I remove them and use drywall screws next to the hole. If they can't be removed I pound them back in and use drywall screws also next to them. I like to remove them because there is always a chance of them popping out again. Patch, prime, and touch up paint.
It could be that the nail was not properly seated against the two by four when it was installed, or your house might have settled slightly and popped a nail. We had some pop in a ceiling when we were changing some wiring, so that's also a possible cause...something moved the drywall. That happened in my powder room when I installed a wall-hung sink. Use drywall screws to reattach, then patch, prime and repaint.
It's not unusual. If you can grab them, pull them out and use drywall screws in their place.
