If you stain it ,then apply a water proof application for wood.I would not paint it
If it is sold real wood you could use the same sealer used on decks I don't know if it will work on the mdf (pressed wood) with plastics vander.
I would treat it with marine epoxy, could be colored or clear.
Use a clear water based polyurethane sealer. If you can get marine grade, water based polyurethane,all the better. Dont shake it!!! It will cause serious bubbling. Stir gently, and use a throw away foam brush. Keep brush wet. The foam brush cuts down on brush strokes. Let it dry completely. Take a 400 grit sandpaper and sand away any imperfections. Blow off all dust, with a hair dryer, or suck it up with vacuum cleaner. . Wipe with a tack cloth. Apply another coat, repeat. 2 coats should do it. But you can add more if you want.
