Vinegar (white) is supposed to get rust off.
I have a special slow cooker only for old hardware. I put the hardware in the cooker, cover with water and let it cook 4-8 hours. When you can get the hardware out (when it is cool enough), clean with paper towel and may need wire brush for tough spots
Toothbrush. My favorite handy dandy cleaning tool for hard to reach places and things with grooves in them.
