I've never been a fan of putting stuff on top of other stuff. Chance of failure multiplies geometrically with each successive layer. Also, if the previous layer has failed, that issue is likely to telegraph through the new installation causing it to fail.

That said, I am not about to get in the middle of a domestic disagreement. Sometimes you have to just let someone fail and decide for themselves what went wrong.

You're right and he's not. Going on top of two layers is just asking for leaks and possible destruction of the shower pan.

You are 100% correct. I can't imagine all of the kinds of mold and bacteria living between those layers, not to mention the dampness that could be eroding the wood supports. I hope this bathroom is on a ground floor, on a slab built house?? Bathroom floors can and do collapse! Insurance prob wdn't cover damage when multi-layer floors are revealed. Leave layers to cakes, not your structural issues! If husband sulks, let him do the demo! That could save you some money if the contractor doesn't have to do it.
