I had Formica-type counters and replaced with solid surface material from Lowe's. Initially, it is pricey, but not like a natural stone. The beauty is that it can be buffed if you manage to mar it in some way. Have had mine for around 10 years and have never had it buffed, even though I am rough!
I installed granite tiles, I bought them at Home Depot on sale, they were very reasonable in price, they are beautiful, they do not scratch, you can't burn them or stain them. They give you all the beauty and durability of solid granite at a mere fraction of the price. I had mine for about 4 years and they still look exactly the same as the day I put them in. I did this myself , it is no harder than laying any tile. Them come in a grey or black.
Craig's list. I got mine free, and in the previous house also.
