How is the wire hung on the back? I've hung them from 2 large heavy picture hooks, and several strands of picture wire wound around each other.
You could put another wire on it to take more weight and use the stud lower down for the second wire. If there is one wire on it, you should be able to put another one on it. Make sure you use heavy enough wire on the hangers.
There are toggle bolts rated for over 50 lbs. My favorite style to use is called Toggler and has a wire tie style system that holds the toggle bolts in place.
