Beautiful stairway. A very inexpensive and probably temporary solution is to try out the idea of white by using contact paper cut to size. I've also attached a site here where you can purchase various type "decals" to apply for different looks. You might like some of those.....more expensive and still not permanent. Perhaps if that is the look you want permanently, you might have them painted with a durable paint. Here's the site:

You could just paint the risers white if you really want to change it up....the purist in me says don’t do it though...the stairs are gorgeous (and likely very expensive)
Love the mahogany. Have you considered putting an oriental style runner up the steps? Painting over the wood would be a shame.
pin or tack some fabric of the color you want to the riser part of the stair. no major damage, and as a bonus when it gets dirty just take it off and wash or replace with the next new color. have fun!
I think you should make the banister handrail the color of the stairs. And leave the stairs the way they are. Leave the spindles the color they are.
Your stair case is absolutely beautiful in its current condition. if there are any changes to be made, my suggestion would be to stain the handrail in a complementary stain color.
Hiya, what beautiful stairs, its amazing what a couple coats of paint can do, I have just finished my stairs using a diamond hard wood paint by Ron seal.
If you don't want the commitment of paint, you could have thin sheets of masonite or melamine cut to fit the existing risers. Then, you could paint those pieces any color you choose, or decoupage with decorative paper or fabric. Then, just install the riser covers with small finish nails or velcro. A bibliophile friend painted hers to look like the spines of her favorite books!
Paint is the quickest and easiest way to do this! This is my recent stair makeover at our beach cottage - it was fun!
