Go to paint store get samples that appeals to you tape it or paint it depending on type of sample you get and live with it for a few days . See how it changes with the light throughout the day and what appeals to you most. Paint being rather inexpensive is not a huge commitment

You can always buy samples of paint and paint squares on the wall or just get some paint sample cards and hold them up to whatever your trying to match to and go from there
I would go to a store and get a lot of sample cards. Choose the colors you like for each room. Tape them to the walls in each room you want to paint. Go into each room at different times of day and take notice to how they look. Also check them on days when the weather is different (sunny, overcast, stormy). After you get it down to a couple for each room, go to the store and buy pint size paint samples and paint them on the wall. Then do what you did before, checking them at different times of day and weather.

If you already have furnishings, rugs, curtains that will live in the rooms, decide if you want them to contrast or coordinate. Then, using a color wheel, choose your colors. See this link to learn more than you ever wanted to know about color: http://www.dreamhomedecorating.com/color-wheel-chart.html. Once you decide on a color story, get sample jars to see how they really look on your walls at different times of the day. Also, perusing decorating websites, articles, books and magazines can be a big help. Happy decorating!
I once belonged to an online forum to which professional decorators also belonged. They suggested getting samples of paint and painting 4 feet square (on paper) swaths of paint and observing them in all sorts of lighting. Our rooms are so small I generally use white.
i've used foam core board to make really big paint chips...and shore grandma is right, lighting can influence how the color looks through out the day.
