I was doubtful when I got the tip that chalk paint worked without fussy prep work; however, I did use on some old IKEA laminated bookcases and so far no peeling. I used TSP to make sure they were clean, be sure to rinse and completely let them dry. I also lightly sanded with fine sandpaper to be sure to give it some tooth, but probably that was just me being over-cautious. Because it doesn't get much use, I didn't poly them, although that's always a good idea. I recommend using a 'real' retail chalk paint like AS instead of homemade, only because I'm not sure what ingredient helps the paint 'stick' so well. (I also use several thinner coats, allowing max dry time between, and let it cure for a few days before using the furniture).
Even though I have not tried Chalk Paint, folks on HT swear it adheres to any surface.
If you want to dress up your cabinet, here is a link to wooden decals you can glue on and once painted, add a darker wax to add depth.
