if the material is wood - use a wood filler paste ( comes in a little jar at any good hardware store ) ... follow directions about how to sand/paint. If the trim is metal I might think about putting a flat head screw into the existing hole, smooth over with a dab of white (paintable ) caulking; and repaint trim with a product designed for metal ( rustoleum makes a great selection of paints )

How to Repair a Stripped Screw Hole in Wood
Either paintable silicone calking or plastic wood in the hole, sand/make smooth and flush p4ior to painting
If it is drywall and you don't want to spend the money,
the oldest "tried and true" method has always been plain
old white tooth paste. Everyone laugh at this but it works
and it's paint able too.
