I have a plastic piece that catches any water and it gets buildu on it too.

i had the auto ice maker removed from my fridges. Yup I gave up. My teeth are a bit sensitive to cold.
Clean up the water, house filtration, water softener, and replace all fridge filters.
Stuart 522 hit the nail on the head, completely clean your system, that should hopefully, preemptively take care of the build up you are experiencing.
The minerals have to be coming from somewhere and it is more than likely the water quality, when it enters your system the purpose is to have any impurities removed giving you ice without minerals.
Is there another manufacturer of the water filter that might have a better product? Maybe contact the service center of your refrig and explain what you are experiencing, they probably have a trouble shooting tech standing by.
Do you have well water or city water?

Thanks to all, for your suggestions.
I have a well, a complete water system and ion changer on my water into the house. Our water had to be chlorinated at the well for our fresh fruit production requirements on our farm, thats the reason for the extensive purification system. We change all of our water filters at the source, into the house and refrigerator monthly. I still fight this problem at all faucets and the refrigerator. I will try the CLR. Thank you.
I use whatever cooking oil I have and rub it on all the surfaces after I clean them. It makes all the surfaces shine and it lasts.
