I had the same problem years ago. Aside from re-plumbing the sinks, you can always use your sink stopper in the other sink by holding it down tightly due to the air pressure the garbage disposal produces. Then run water in the other sink to drain the resins left in the pipe on that side.
And I wasn't clear regarding the sink stopper. You will need a solid stopper found in hardware stores, Walmart, Target, etc..
Ours empties into our sink also. Just the way they used to run the plumbing I guess.
You may have some blockage in the drain pipe, they both drain into the same pipe. I have never had the contents of the disposal come up in the other sink. Putting a plug on the other sink and some water for weight may do the trick, too.
