How can I get rid of damp odor from loose and framed photos?

A friend gave me many old photos which he had in his basement and they smell of dampness. They did not come directly in contact with water so there are no stains just damp odor.

Hi Barb, I would put the photos in an air tight container and put several pieces of charcoal. Just like the charcoal you use to grill outside. Close the container and let it set for a few days. If they still smell bad, repeat. Charcoal or baking soda is helpful when trying to remove foul odors. I hope this helps you.

Charcoal is a good idea but I recommend activated charcoal vs grilling charcoal. Also u don't want the pictures to come in contact w charcoal so put the pictures in a smaller container inside a plastic tote w the charcoal in the larger and seal the tote. Baking soda can touch the pictures so u could try to seal a few in a baggie with the baking soda. If deodorizing fails, u could scan the pictures.

Take all the photos out of the frames. You can wipe down the frame with a damp cloth with vinegar and water. Then mist lightly with "Odoban" (you can probably buy at Walmart) and wipe dry. Then wash the glass. You can even lay the frames out and dust with Baking Soda and let them sit for a while.

A friend who smoked heavily gave me a beautiful dish cabinet...it stunk up my entire living room and dining room before I could get the smell out. It was polished mahogany so I wanted to be very careful. I sat it on an old sheet in the middle of my living room and wound up wiping it down several times, spraying every surface with "Odaban" and putting baking soda not only inside and closing the doors, but sprinkling soda on the wood and letting it sit a while.

Take 1 photo out onto a porch in a protected area and shake some baking soda on it and let it set a while. Then shake off the soda and wipe softly with dry cloth...sort of like brushing it off, not rubbing it. See if that got the smell out.

Charcoal takes out odors but I don't know how you would get it on the photos unless you ground it and sprinkled it around. Don't put them back in that same box.
