how much space is there? Is it sun or shade?
How large of a space do you have and what sunlight does the space enjoy?
A gteat idea for small areas is pots, pots and more pots! Different sizes grouped with tall and short plants. We use this now that the "gardeners" are aging; easy to water and easy to replace the few plans that don't make it!
I have started converting my garden into containers. My tomatoes are in 5 gallon buckets. Fill partially with pinecones to save money on potting soil and to make them lighter. They can be moved in and out of sun also. Lots of things can be grown in buckets just poke drain holes in the bottom. There's lots of different sizes and colors out there.
You can get tiered plant stands that will allow for more pots in a smaller areas, some plant stands have enough room to put a shorter potted plant underneath it. Just make sure they have plenty of drainage and the pot is big enough for the mature plant.
Yes the sunlight does direct what you can successfully grow. And are you speaking of a flower type garden or an edible garden or would you want to incorporate both? A garden doesn't have to be large to make an impact and bring you joy and relaxation. In fact the smaller the better because they are work. I mean you have to carve out time daily to deal with a garden of any size and not just for watering. They bring weeds and they need to be dealt with as soon as you see them so they don't spread. Hey you can even have a water feature in a small area if you have electricity near by. Many things you can do so don't be disheartened. You can have a garden just watch how much sun you get and decide how much time you want to devote to that area and what is important to you. Do you want to be able to have a small chair and table set as well to sit among your space then you may want to stick to planters. You can do it and search this site it has an amazing amount of gardens that are just great and for all sizes of space.
