i would use PVA glue and sand . you may have to rub the glaze down with sandpaper to roughen it up first, but should do the trick.
Rustoleum has several different kinds of textured spray paint that are great for this type of project. The rustoleum website has all the different kinds and colors and some how to videos. Good luck hope this helped.
I got mine at home depot .used a clear spray sealer first than the spray 2x coverage paint .they have a lot of different colors and the hammered texture .then let dry and sprayed clear sealer last .looks good .
