Prep is the most important part - and using a good primer. If you're worried about the grain showing, you could use grain-filler prior to painting.
Oak grain spreads & contracts with moisture & heat. I redid a large kitchen & purchased new maple doors & drawers & used 2 coats of melamine paint on both the doors/drawers and the cabinet boxes. That sealed really well, with very little grain showing for 10 years. If it’s a piece of free standing furniture, the same idea would work - thorough sanding is really important. If you aren’t concerned with the grain, paint like any other project.
