how about sheet metal?
We put the corrogated acrylic sheets up on ours. First time we had alternating green and white which lasted for about 20 years until a hail storm damaged them. We now have a white color. We live in Sask. and it holds up well to the snow and in summer gives some protection from the sun while not making the adjacent windows totally dark.

Rippled tin, rippled fiberglas, shade cloth (double for more shade) outdoor canvas... or use wood... it just depends on where it is and how dark you want it. .. roof framing should be closer together if you get a lot of snow or rain.... the material can buckle with out it.
Some websites have free plans to build a gazebo, Square or otherwise. Those plans would of course include the square roof. You could download one of those plans and create your roof with plywood or wood from pallets. You might also try purchasing a gazebo from either eBay or Etsy where individuals sell used items much more inexpensively than purchasing from a retailer. Good luck!
Thank you so much 😊
If you want a rustic look, use recycled tin sheets or other sheet metal.
I often see, especially at this time of year, old fencing that has been taken down for noon. If you can gather up old fence boards cut them down to shake shingle size and use those for your roof. If you want a little cleaner look power wash them first to get a lot of the dirt and grime then seal them with fence stain.
