I would stick the root in a black plastic bag and blast it with an insecticide to kill any critters in there, seal the bag and let it sit a week.
I think perhaps a coat of polyurethane over the paint would give added protection. Be sure to let everything dry THOROUGHLY between coats and after you are done. Then, try this foe the gluing:

I agree. I would put a few coats of Poly on it, or you could use teak oil. For the glue a hot glue gun should do the trick. Good Luck!
Sounds like a beautiful project. To insure no insects, etc. live in the roots, I'd seal it with clear finish even though you've painted it. You should be able to hot glue or gorilla glue to adhere your decorative items to it. Hope you post a pic of it after you're done....sounds like it will be a decorative original piece of art.
Yes, be sure the wood is sealed with something like polyurethane, do this outside. Or you could use a spray on clear coat to seal it.
Apply the flowers with hot glue or better yet gorilla glue.
