i use old sheets and blankets from the thrift store, don’t use plastic as it won’t keep out the cold, also gunny sacks or grain sacks if you can find them.
I agree with Penmur77, I use old sheets that I don't use anymore, or get some from Salvation Army. Plastic is definitely a no-no. Just wash and fold your garden sheets and keep them in a separate bin in the garage so that you know where they are and can put them out quickly without hunting for them. You can use the sheets for other things, it won't change the way they protect your plants at all.
have used towels as well
Old sheets will do. Anything in cloth as it will not sweat and freeze.
I have collected old blankets from thrift stores. They seem to work better than sheets to cover plants from that unexpected freeze.
I’ve gardened from the northeast to Alaska. My best tip is to get some 1” pvc pipes, put the ends into the dirt in your beds crosswise and cover with visquene. Mini greenhouses. 👍Very inexpensive and easily added and removed. To start plants very early I filled plastic jugs, like milk filled with water heated by the sun during the day- fill with hot water for a quick need. If you cover the beds in the winter with the visquene, you prevent the soI’ll from becoming saturated with snow/water and becoming a block of ice. I was able to start my plants on average a month earlier than others by doing this. 🌴🐶
