Have you looked into building a pergola? It could be attached to your building and would be far heavier and much more stable. You can buy some pergolas that have a removable canvas top that gives you more shade. They are a little more pricier than a really good heavy duty pop up tent but I think they would last much longer and the only thing you would have to remove is the sliding top--or perhaps you would only need to fold it tp one side and secure it for the winter. I too have used pop up tents on my deck but I have looked at the pergolas many times at the big big stores like Menards and Home Depot.
You didn't say if you had a fence, but if so attach a few xlarge metal eyescrews into the posts, you'll use them for tie downs for the tarps. Purchase some tarps that measure the 20 foot length and whatever size width you want. Tarps come with metal grommets, feed doubled over nylon rope through grommets, use the loop formed to feed through the screw in post, bring up to the other end of rope & then tie off. Awning done and you can pull it down in the winter with no problem.
Tarps look like trash !!! Horrible !! Why not buy some sun sails for the time being and you will have shade and more privacy.
A pergola seems to be a good solution, they are sturdy and a cover can be placed on top to block the sun and removed when the weather gets bad, or wintertime.
Try buying sunshades in Costco or some other discount store and stringing them up. Works great!
Walmart sells sun sails in their garden area. not sure if they are waterproof.
would just use the same plan for the sides as the top. If it's possible, maybe you can find or buy a couple of beams 6 x 6 or 8x8 from a place likr the Restore or recycling center. Then bury the posts deep for stability. Good luck.
