What is used to hold the stone in place on purchased faux planters?

You cannot see the substance pooled anywhere and the stones still look very natural. It makes it very easy & quick to clean them rather them having loose pebbles or rocks.

Stones on the outside of the planter? Probably a strong glue or the stones may be placed in the cement or resin mixture actually creating the planter.
I use E600 glue on each individual stone.
I think what you want is Acrylic Water, a gel that will hold pebbles, flowers in vase. or you can use 2-part epoxy resin (be sure to get the crystal clear kind). https://www.pinterest.com/pin/260434790923779133/?lp=true
