I am an art teacher so I use them to hold color pencils. I always get my students to decorate them different ways for fun. You can wrap different color yarn around them. I have the students work on a section at a time and paint one area with elmer's glue all. If you like this technique it works with bottles too. I even had a student do it on branches the she added cotton and tissue paper so it looked like a pussy willow branches.
I saw a woman built a shed out of wood pallets then took tin cans cut off top and bottom then cut the can up the middle, spread the can out flat, painted them a copper color and used then as roof tiles. Now all you need is a building! 😁
I have seen posts with "The Tin Man' from the Wizard of Oz made with tin cans. I remember the tuna cans were the feet. The body was a large coffee can and the arms and legs were soup cans. They even glued a upside down funnel for the hat. Spray paint the whole thing with silver paint. Really cute garden art.
