Be careful about "cheap" because sometimes it just makes more work down the line.
That plastic "looks like tile" product is very pretty and anyone can do it, but before you decide to use it, make sure you check out some reviews on how it holds up. Keep in mind that thin plastic is not a heavy duty product! How good is the glue going to hold...will moisture (and steam) get behind the tiles and create mold.
Grouted tile has been used for back splashes for decades because it is durable. Stick with the tried and true instead of "today's trend that is out of style next year"...white subway tile has been a favorite since it was used over a hundred years ago.
If you really want something different, look into using sheets of stainless steel or copper, how to install it and how to waterproof the joints.

You can get a neutral field tile at a reasonable price, look for clearance tiles since you wouldn't need a lot. Then you can get a decorative tile to use to dress it up. There are classes at Home Depot and Lowes to teach beginners how to install tile. When it's finished, just remember to seal it to make it easier to keep clean. Good luck with your project.
