What NOT to use: pressure treated wood, rail road ties, pallets that have been treated (there is a code on them... not sure which ones TO get)... all of these have been treated with hazardous chemicals that can leech into the compost and then into food plants...
What ever you use, be sure to make it large enough that you can get in there and turn the compost over at least once per month.
I have seen people use pallets or whatever scrap wood they happened to have on hand. We used wood pallets ourselves and the composting bins lasted almost 8 years.
