How to decorate finials?

I have oval/round plain wooden finials around my deck on top of the railings, we want to do something really creative with them, any ideas?

A lot of folks around here cover them with copper.
If you’re nautical, wrap with cord and seal with marine clear spray.
Copper sheets, cut and molded to fit. But there should be ready-made on line.
