Hello Carol. You didn’t say what type of mailbox you have; however, I assume it is the outdoor type since those are the ones that get the most abuse from the elements. Here is a possible solution for you. Click on the link below to view how another individual redid his mailbox. Good luck!

Janet has the right idea... just be sure to check a wood support post to make sure it is still sound (no damage from carpenter ants or termites, or dry rot) replace if necessary, use metal if termites and wood rot are a factor in your area. Just make sure the mail box goes back in the same location, at the regulation height of 36 inches to 42 inches from the bottom of the box to the Road surface.... The house number should be at least 1 inch or more in height and should be on the right side of the box, as you face the box. You can also put the number on the door if you wish. Replace the box if it is very rusty, leaks, is dented, or is too small (stuffed full with each days mail) a larger box will allow for out of sight delivery of small parcels.
Pinterest.com will have some great ideas on making your mailbox unique using shape, or color... a fun mail box... makes people smile... especially the mail carrier.
