How to refurbish rusty hedge trimmers?

My NEW hedgetrimmers (which I'd assumed were lost) had actually been left outside last summer in some weeds and have now rusted in an open position and the blades are funky with old mud and rusted open. Any ideas on how to bring them back to "new?" They weren't cheap and it would be a shame to just pitch them! Thanks in advance!

Try spraying them with WD40 and then rub with plain steel wool. -
