If the pool fence is absolutely necessary, the only way to make a space feel bigger is with light colors and mirrors. If the pool fence is not absolutely necessary, perhaps you could install a pool cover instead. I have seen ads for pool covers that people can walk on. Best of luck to you.
Do you have electrical outlets outside under the pergola area? If so, consider adding LED mini lights. As they require very little energy to operate, they could be left on even during the daytime or times when it is not full sunshine. (Do you get any of those days where you are in Australia?) This would more dimension in the shadowy spaces and in doing so, visually widen the area under cover.
You're welcome. Well, I guess you may not need more light during the daytime then, but the lights will make the pergola area feel wider and less closed-in after dark. Enjoy!
