How to keep dirt from falling out of the hole in a potted plant?

    First off , the hole in the bottom of the pot is necessary for proper drainage , avoiding excessive soil moisture and rotting roots . One way to slow a constant water passing through and soil run-off is by placing small stones , about 1" deep , depending on pot size , to slow drainage .

    Before you put dirt in pot, put a coffee filter in bottom. This will prevent dirt from coming out of bottom

    A shingle sheet of newspaper will keep the dirt in until it forms a block of soil.Cheap, and biodegradable.
