An inexpensive idea is to get a large plant saucer (the heavy plastic type). Then drill 3-4 holes in the rim and add chain or polyester cord to hang it from a tree or shepherds hook. Birds only like water 1 to 1-1/2 inches deep.
I like to use large flat topped candlestands and glue a
large bowl to the top using E6000 glue. Search out your local Goodwill/thrift store to see what kinds of old glassware you can find to make a unique birdbath with.
