Z on May 16, 2014I love using bakers racks for plants. I do agree that this one needs a little makeover (drawer area) to make it work better in it's new location. I'd either stain it to match the front door or paint it to match the reddish trim. Add some pretty colored pots with plants and you're set.Helpful Reply

Donna Byram on May 16, 2014I also think either the red or same color as your front door for the shelf and drawers. I think a cute welcome sign, and a ceramic figurine or two would look good among the potted plants.Helpful Reply

Sheila Conlon on May 17, 2014Lorraine, so do you and your fur-baby walk in the winter as well? Here is an Idea. Go to your Thrift store and get some over the door hooks, and add those to the top for drying gloves, hats, etc... Get some square baskets for the bottom shelf to keep leashes, potty bags, etc. Then when planting season comes around...... you have places to hang your tools, and places to keep needed supplies. As far as painting it, I think a play with your house colors in reverse would look great, little more punch of your great red with the accent being the brown.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on May 18, 2014I can understand the expense of plants every year. I used to do spring, summer, fall and winter plantings...no more. Were I you, I would paint the entire piece, drawers and all, with Rustoleum Copper! It is stunning! It has enough of a redish tint to go well with your red. Think about a miniature shrub on that drawer level for the centerpiece and then some pretty grasses and vines in colorful pots. The different greens can be beautiful...and if you want a pop of color, add a couple of Gerber daisies.Helpful Reply

Karin From B'ham on May 18, 2014I also like the idea of painting or staining the wood on this piece to go with the red house trim. Paint the drawer pulls black if they are not already (hard to tell.) Most of all, center between the window and the entrance. It will take on a whole new look when you get some plants on it. I think you got a great piece with many options!Helpful Reply

Mary on May 18, 2014You could do so many things with this area. My first thoughts are to move it closer to the window and put two large pots on each side of the steps. I would put something evergreen, tall, and skinny in the pots. Since you have an exterior plug in you can decorate the pots with lights at Christmas. The bakers rack could be painted red but a slightly brighter red or all black. I would use the bakers rack and decorate it seasonally. Old suitcases, baskets, plants, statuary, seasonal items like pumpkins etc. great space to really have fun. I usually put something next to a piece like this to ground it. Good luck and just have fun with it. Adding green and complementary colors will make it really pop.Helpful Reply

Deborah G. on May 18, 2014Hi Lorraine, to me the baker's rack (and the whole area) would make a lovely little out doors room. A great place to have a cup of coffee and just enjoy your area. I love Jeanette's idea about the copper color, but I would only paint the wood copper. Maybe some cute baskets for the bottom shelf and a throw or two that compliments the house colors, kinda "overflowing" from the baskets, with a pillow and throw on the chair. For the upper shelves, some nice lanterns and covered candles would make it cozy and inviting.Helpful Reply

Amy Ogden-Paparone on May 18, 2014Great find! If this was mine, I'd paint it the color of the trim around your front door and paint the drawer area black. Or, if you really don't feel like painting the whole thing again, paint the drawer and top area the color of your trim and I think it'll look Beautiful!!Helpful Reply
