I use a commercial jewelry cleaner, a usually blue liquid id a jar that has a basket to dip the piece in. It does not work on pearls, and may damage hand-painted parts. On really tarnished pieces I use a silver polish and gently rub the areas I can, then rinse and dry.
plain white toothpaste
Hi Maryke, I really like to soak mine in warm water and dawn soap. Put in to soak and 2 to 3 mins and a little or old tooth brush, once you've cleaned what you need, then run under cool water and dry either on it's own or hand dry. Watch the jewelry shine. Have a great day.,
I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.
I agree with William, toothpaste is gently and won't remove the metal over time. Do not use anything with salt in it, it will turn it black. Made the mistake of leaving a sterling chain and charm on when I swam in a salt water pool, took me forever to get it off.
