Hi Penny,
The best way is to use warm water and dishwashing detergent (like Dawn). Even though I use this, I looked online to see if there was something better. I actually found a website that tells you what NOT to use with your jewelry and also suggests the same solution that I use as the best. You can read about that here, if you choose. Wishing you the best.

what kind of jewelry
I have used I tbsp. ammonia to I/2 cup water in a jar. Works for me! Baking soda for silver.
Buy a jar of jewelry cleaner at Target or Walmart along with a polishing cloth. Follow directions on items.
Never use cleaners on soft stones like pearls, opals, turquoise, etc. Use warm water and a soft cloth. For tarnished silver jewelry, plain old fashioned toothpaste with no get or additives and a tooth brush will work really well and rinse off with warm water. For the rest, I use hot water and dawn and a toothbrush and they sparkle once rinsed and dried.
Denture tablets do wonders for cleaning jewelry. Do not use on soft stones
I sell a lot of jewelry on Ebay. Silver, gold, with and without stones. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.
