I'd love to see a picture of your piece Tanesha, but you should be able to paint over most pieces even if it has a really shiny finish. You would probably need to do some sanding so the next layer of paint has something to grip onto
You can paint over almost anything!! Even laminate! I always prep with some 220 grit sandpaper (120 grit if it's laminate) sand lightly all over and then clean it with a mix of denatured alcohol and water.
