I have an older brick home. The vents are as old. Need something DIY to hold over to warmer weather and have new ones put in. It's really cold outside.
I am not an a.c. expert but there could be several things that could keep it running. Thermostat or bad contactor or the coils etc. To shut off sometimes there is a shut off valve by the compressor try that if not then to stop it running go to your breaker box for all your electrical and turn off the one that goes to a.c. unit. It should be marked. If you shut the breaker off you won't have any air and may have to turn it back on to get cool again. But it beats an enormous electrical bill.
It sounds like from your post, that this began happening after the in RG tech replaced the relay switch in the capacitor. If that’s the case, call that text back and have him fix it. I’m a big believer in holding repair people accountable for their work.
try spraying it with cold water daily or more if necessary. helps keep coils cool.
You should call them to come back out as Carol suggested because he got the wires crossed when he wired the relay switch and capacitor up.
Do yourself a favor and cancel your warranty and call a reputable AC company. It is usually a handy man that comes out (man of many trades master of none) with any issue with you may have that is covered in your policy. Please let me know if problem is solved.
Sounds like the wires were crossed originally shorted out and melted the points shut on the contactor. That is BS. Doesn't matter how old the unit is. The tech is full of cr*p. Of course there are OEM parts for everything but there are universal replacement parts. They screwed up. If you don't get satisfaction this time around I agree with Wanda. Cancel your warranty and call a real HVAC company.
I am an Hvac expert. Your technician is not a tech. Ditch him and get your money back.
