There are decorative building blocks that fit right on each other.
...Take up the grass where you will be building the pit.
...Dig a hole and put in a liner.
...Build up a wall at last 6" above the ground.
...Put crushed stone at least 1' around the outside of the Pit.
...Be considerate of others...buy or make a screen to hold down sparks.
Here is a link to liners...as well as one for a screen.

To me, fire pits belong in the middle of a paved or crust stone area with at least 8' from the pit! Fire pits scare me because I don't trust people to properly install and maintain them. There are burning restrictions for a reason.
We had young neighbors who liked to sit outside in the cool of fall laughing and drinking beer with their friends while sparks were flying up in the air 10 feet right in the middle of an area where every yard was covered with dry fall leaves!
They could have partied loudly until dawn and I would not have cared. Beer drinking at midnight with sparks flying...not so good. I liked them well enough but i sure was so glad to see a mature couple buy their house!
STAY SAFE!!!
good luck!
