I like an dark orange or burgundy.

Go with a lighter chalk paint, since you already have such awesome style and color with the vases and curtains. You could go with a yellow chalk paint as that is one of the main colors in there.
Nice piece. After painting in your chosen color, you can either leave or remove grating in the doors and install fabric covered foam core panels with a color coordinated fabric. I did that with an under stair closet that had broken shutters. Looked great.
