How to replace vinyl sliding windows?

The vinyl inserts in the vinyl sliders need to be replaced. For the time being I wanted acrylic to hold me over until I could replace with proper glass windows. Acrylic estimate was $3600. Vinyl $1100
I do not want to replace at that price when I really want glass (I plan on extending the A/C duct work into this room in the future).
So,.... has anyone DIY replaced the vinyl with acrylic? How did you finish edge,...moulding? Thank you!!!!

We have never replaced vinyl before, but we have put in acrylic and glass into windows before. As for the edging, they make tools you can get at the hardware store along with the edging that glides it into place after you place your glass/acrylic/vinyl into place. Good luck!
