Judy, it depends on what it is stained with, and how the mattress is made. I am going to assume the worst -- that it is stained with urine and has now dried. I would use an upholstery shampoo that says it will get out urine. Most of them are made to pull the stains up to the surface. If this does not work, you can make a paste of baking soda and water and scrub the top/fabric of the mattress, let dry and vacuum up. But if the mattress is made of a porous material that allowed the urine (or whatever) to soak down into it, you will probably never get the smell out of it. If the mattress is too good to discard, then after cleaning, put a plastic zippered cover on it that completely encases it, put a good mattress pad on top of that, and keep using it if you can't smell it through all that. And go out now and get those plastic zippered covers for ALL your mattresses. Accidents happen from all sorts of things to everyone.
Hi Judy, Make a solution of one-quarter cup hydrogen peroxide, a half cup baking soda, and one teaspoon of dish soap. Scrub the mattress using this recipe with a soft brush. Then blot it back up. Repeat if necessary. Good luck.
Lemon juice and baking soda and put it out in the sun if you can.
I have used peroxide and water in a mister bottle. Blot it and repeat the misting , but let it air dry, until the stain is gone. No rubbing.Removes blood, urine, most stains. There is also acommercial product that works great and removes all odors>Jingo's.
