Rain Gutter Grow System by Larry Hall is there anyone doing this??

Always. Careful of the roots remaining too wet on certain plants with the number of sponges you add. The plants may also weave roots into the sponge and need to be cut out.
Pretty much that answer is always going to be yes. Most plants will not survive well in soil that doesn't have decent drainage
yes
All flower pots should have a hole in the bottom for drainage. I don't understand why they don't. :-)
Add a couple of inches of stones to the bottom of the pot before potting the plant. When watering, be sure not to over water because then the roots will rot. It is definitely better to have a pot with a hole, so you know you are watering thoroughly to the bottom of the pot.
Depending on the material of the pot, you can sometimes make a hole in the pot with a nail and hammer. If it is ceramic, you can use a proper drill bit to make a hole without breaking the pot.
