Mind you, I’m a sucker for the fabulous poplars. They make me feel I should be wearing a beautiful dress.
The first site has a regional growing map, which should help you make choices.
One site recommends Mimosa. Do not. They are filthy. The dog brought their seed droppings into the house on every trip.
I'd go with a bush, and plant in a row like a hedge. I love forsythia. It blooms early, grows quickly and can be allowed to grow naturally or trimmed after bloom time is over to a more contained shape. Pretty easy care, general feeding, and not many pests. Don't know what area you are in, but there are lilacs, pussy willow, spiraea....lots of bushes that would do the trick.
BE CAREFUL WHICH FAST-GROWING TREEs you use: trees like cHEERY LAURAL, will grow up in two yrs., but die in 5-10 years, leaving runners under your lawn and bushes, Almost impossible to get rid of.
THURGA evergreens and other EVERGREEN TREES seem to be the best for me.
agree that many fast growing trees are short-lived. I read in one forum to plant a fast growing tree and then a slow growing one. That way when the fast growing tree dies the slow growing one has reached a good size.
why not try Red Tip hedge? while this is not a tree, the fast growing red tip will be great for a divider.
