Honestly, I believe it's all about what you like and what you want to live with. I hated that that beige & brown trend that is just ending and chose to reno our house in colors that I like and am comfortable with. only worry about trends if you are trying to sell.
Do what you feel and like. Trends come and go. If everyone followed trends we'd never have a life. White today, wood tomorrow, then back to white the next day. Painted walls today, wallpaper tomorrow. Carpeting today, wood flooring tomorrow, then ceramic the next and back to carpet. A lot of trends are set by manufacturers. Paint choices for 2018. Tile styles for 2018. New wallpapers for 2018. A lot of DIY TV shows highlight trends, products, and styles.
pick your favorite color, put it on the wall. it's your house. if you have a few colors in mind, how the room is lit does matter. i got an awesome tip from a painter friend.. go get a large foam board, paint it the color of your first pick. live with it for a week. move it around the room. still looks good..paint. if it isn't quite right, go to pick no.2 repeat. most of the time you can get tester paints to do this with.

Unless you are planning on selling in the near future, don't worry about it. It is your house, finish it in a manner that makes you happy! Unless you have nothing but time and money to constantly remodel, and if you do, way cool! - most people do not. Every manufacturer, paint, wallpaper, flooring, hardware, has a hot trend to follow. That is how they stay in business. Same with home decor, vague and not so vague designers show perfectly staged and curated rooms on TV and in magazines to get people excited. Do what suits your lifestyle and family and spend quality time with them, that's what counts!
