Hi Lyl,
The first step is to cut out a hole in the stump for your plants. Click below for an article that will take you though the complete process from bland stump to pretty flowered stump. Wishing you the best.

Not sure this is the proper method. I drill several holes into the stump, then chip away at the center of the stump until I achieve the desired size. Sometimes I place a potted plant into the hole. Other times, I fill the hole with the proper garden soil for what is being planted. I have had good success with this method.
I leave mine in the pots all winter .when the frost gets them then cut off . Come spring they will come back .I have hostages summer pholx even did morning glory in a pot by mistake. .saved lol seeds put in pot thought they were impatient. . Had to put a trellis behind them .I planted English ivy around my stump. .the ivy grows fast . Good luck with your stump projects .
You are very welcome. We have lost trees to disease so using a pot gives me comfort that whatever product may have been used to try and save the tree or what actually killed the tree does not infest my plant. Also, easily changed or brought in for the winter. Another pro, you do not worry about where drainage water flows or onto. Happy Gardening!!
Thank u again,i forgot to ask about drainage, now i know. We to had a problem with our pine trees about 3 yrs. Ago,so sad, still dont know what killed 2 fully grown beautiful trees. Didnt touch any of our blue sruce's thought and im thankful,i absolutly love trees,we have many on our property.thank you again
