I'd vote for level, just below where the ceiling starts to slant, if that would protect the wall.
You might attach a "U" bolt to the slant and slide the end of the rod through that.
This one is called a flange mount. Available in plastic and chrome. The heavier one has more screws so it can be adjusted more precisely.
