We've had vinyl siding for the last 30 years (on different houses) and the only problems I've found are that it does fade over time and that it melts if your husband puts the grill to close to it, LOL! Other than that, it's pretty much no maintenance unless you need to power wash it to clean it.
Most vinyl will sun rot, becoming brittle. Should you have a nasty hail storm with large stones it will break and be ruined.
I agree with the previous comments. I will add I don’t think it is a dyi project unless you are willing to do your research about proper istallation techniques. If you do it incorrectly it will buckle. Also, if the ground is within inches of the bottom of the vinyl it may get holes in it from a weed wacker (dtring trimmer). Also landscapers using gas operated blowers who stand too close to it will melt your siding. Regarding fading, I think it depends on the color. My house has had siding for at least 15 years. Last year I had a strip replaced due to a hole a landscaper put in. It was a perfect match. I think the new siding takes sun better than old. It probably lasts longer without becoming brittle. There is yearly maintenance. I live in southern Massachusetts and we get around 10 inches of snow a year. Our summers a hot and pretty dry. I have to powerwash my siding (light gray) once a year. But natural siding might need powerwashing and re-painting. Stained wood is less maintenance. (Apply the stain before installation). My foundation planting isn’t close to the siding and I don’t have much shade on my house. Lighter colors will show dirt and mold more easily than dark. But dark will fade more easily. I would go for a darker color. I prefer natural sidings for ecological reasons and esthetics. Budget is another matter. Also, add insulation before putting on new siding if your house needs more. It will save money in the long run. Hope this helps.
