Be sure to prep your surface properly according to the directions on the paint you're using. A lot of people like chalk paint; just make sure you seal or wax it after painting to protect it. Personally, I can't stand the look of distressing because to me it makes the piece look like it's damaged. Whether to distress or not is a matter of personal taste.
