What kind of wood is hiding under the carpet? You may be able to sand and stain/poly or paint the risers and treads. Or you may have to install new treads and risers over what you have. It depends on how the stairs were constructed and whether they were made to look pretty or just be functional with carpet over them.
Hi Jen,
You can paint or stain them. If you want them to look like new, be sure you remove all tack strips and nails. Sand them smooth then use a vacuum followed by a tack cloth to remove all dust. You can then either paint or stain. One of the looks that is popular is to stain the treads, then paint the risers and the stringers white. It can truly update your stairs. Wishing you the best.
